Water Safety

Children of all ages love the water.  When you spend time with them in the backyard pool or at the lake, you are making memories together that will last a lifetime. Sadly, across the United States, child drownings are a leading cause of injury and death.  The risk is even higher in Arizona, a state ranked second in the nation for child drownings.

However, Arizona is also home to some of the nation’s most innovative and effective drowning prevention programs.  Our hard work and collaboration as a state are a strong factor in the reduction of the per-capita child drowning rate to some of the lowest levels on record in recent years.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s water safety program, “Water Watchers,” has received national recognition.  We are happy to provide you with the real-life solutions you need.

About Water Watchers

On May 31, 1998, Weston Letter drowned in his family's swimming pool. Family members and friends of the Letter family began Phoenix Children's Hospital's Water Watchers programs to honor Weston's memory and teach the community that tragedy knows no boundaries.  His story reminds us of the importance of water safety for all children.  Read Weston's story.

As the only verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in Arizona, Phoenix Children’s Hospital works hard, not just to treat children who are injured, but also to prevent injuries from happening to them.  Our Water Safety program has received national recognition, and Phoenix Children’s is a leader in the prevention of child drownings.
