Our Work for Open Water Safety

Child drowning totals in Arizona are highest in the summer months, and back-to-school distractions make August especially dangerous. Phoenix Children’s Hospital has brought “Drowning Impact Awareness Month,” the purple ribbon campaign, to the state since 2004.

The effort includes a kickoff event, official proclamations from the governor and various mayors across the state, and distribution of the very latest information to families to help them protect their children.

Because rivers and lakes can be especially dangerous for older children, Phoenix Children’s developed special open water safety messages, to get the message out. We distributed special water safety materials in the month of August to encourage water-safe behavior on the open water. More than 10,000 open water safety ribbon cards were distributed in 2010.

This year, in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Game and Fish, we are pleased to offer open water safety cards once again.
