What led you to your career as a psychiatrist?
I was mentored by the Chief of Psychiatry of the Medical School I attended in South Africa and was struck by the comprehensive view psychiatry takes in the care of patients. I was attracted to the interface of biology, psychological and social aspects of psychiatry, with further influence from the judicial system and politics.

What is the best thing about your job?
Being able to help kids and families do the best they can.

Have you received a special gift of thanks or piece of artwork from a child?
I received several drawings from kids that I worked with. One of the kids with autism that I treated while in Massachusetts published a book about his experiences and I was particularly proud to receive a signed copy of the book.

What is your favorite children’s book?
This is a hard question. I like a lot of them!

How do you go about calming a child’s fears? Aside from the wonderful work of the Child Life team?
Sometimes a kid needs to just hear that what is happening with them is not the end of the world, and that someone truly believes that they have what it takes to be OK.

How do you build trust with a parent?
Be as honest and direct as I would like a doctor to be with me.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I do not have a lot of free time. I like going to sport events, hiking, jogging and traveling.

What is your favorite local restaurant?
Los Dos Molinos in South Phoenix. Crazy décor and crazy, spicy food! Also Seasons 52.

Can you tell us about your family?
I am fortunate that my partner’s two daughters are living with us. They are wonderful, creative and loving kids who I adore.

Where are you originally from, and how did you get here?
I’m originally from South Africa, and am in Arizona via Canada and Massachusetts.
