Blood & Marrow Transplant Program

Our Ottosen Family Blood and Marrow Transplant program, in collaboration with Mayo Clinic Arizona in Scottsdale, uses stem cell transplants to help patients renew the building blocks that create healthy cells.

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a therapy that we offer for various types of hematologic, oncologic and other metabolic/genetic conditions. Its development and use have helped boost the survival rate for some blood cancers to more than 85 percent. But finding out your child needs a bone marrow transplant can be overwhelming. Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is here for you, your child and family — as one of the nation’s leading BMT programs.

As the only freestanding children's hospital in Arizona with a bone marrow transplant program, we’ve been offering BMT services just for children since 2003. In collaboration with Mayo Clinic Arizona, the Ottosen Family Blood and Marrow Transplant program offers comprehensive care from the pretransplant period through long-term post-transplant survivorship needs.

With an average of more than 40 transplants per year, our BMT program has survival rates in the top 10 percent nationally for all diagnoses and types of transplants. We also offer access to a wide range of clinical trials and will talk to your family about whether your child could benefit from participation.

Comforting and Caring for Children and Families

Because our specialists and other staff members have dedicated their professional lives to caring for sick children, we know how to help put children and families at ease. Your child will be assigned a transplant team of doctors, nurses, physician assistants, dietitians, physical therapists and more — all committed to your child’s successful treatment and full recovery. You’ll be kept informed and involved at each stage of your child’s treatment.

We understand what an emotional toll a child’s serious illness can take on family and loved ones. That’s why we offer the services and resources you need to make this journey, such as our dedicated psychosocial team with psychology as well as supportive counselors, child life specialists, music therapy and animal-assisted therapy to help reduce stress for children.

Even our facilities are child friendly and family focused, and include:

  • 16 private BMT rooms
  • BMT family break room
  • Playroom
  • Physical therapy room
  • High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-filtered air everywhere (so children can leave their rooms)
  • Access to the Ronald McDonald House
