Second year (community/develoment) residents attend the Autism Diagnostic Clinic every Monday morning that their schedule allows. Clinic begins at 7:30 AM. Clinic visits are preceded by a series of 4 lectures on the following topics: Definitions of ASD, Diagnosis-Screening and Evaluation, Treatment, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Residents complete a visit form that will guide them through interviewing questions, behavioral observations, review of systems, diagnosis, examination, and treatment planning. They also complete a structured observation form of the child's behaviors.
Increase medical knowledge in the areas of: Autism, Asperger’s, ASD, language and learning disorders, cognitive disabilities, assessment of behavioral adjustment and temperament, major diagnostic classifications and schemas, integration of evaluations from other disciplines, evidence-based interventions, early intervention and education, complementary and alternative approaches, and consultation and referral.
Strengthen patient care, interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism by actively participating in direct patient care using guided interview and observation forms.
Expand knowledge of system-based practice using resources and information provide in the Autism packet, lecture material, Autism Toolkit and Emily Center packet.
Improve practice-based learning techniques by participating in educating patients and families diagnosed with an ASD.
