Conditions We Treat

Orthopedics

The orthopedics team at Phoenix Children’s diagnoses and treats a wide range of common and more complex conditions affecting children’s and teens. These include:

  • Bone abnormalities: At Phoenix Children’s, we offer a Bone Abnormality Clinic to treat a range of bone conditions, like tibial torsion (inward twisting of the shin bone), femoral anteversion (inward twisting of the thigh bone), bowlegs, knock knees and many conditions of the feet.
  • Cerebral palsy: This life-long condition impacts communication between the brain and muscles, which causes permanent movement and posture problems. Care for cerebral palsy is coordinated through our Cerebral Palsy Clinic: This multidisciplinary clinic gives you and your child access to all of the experts and resources you need to manage your child’s care.
  • Clubfoot: This condition — when one or both feet are turned inward — is present at birth and affects bones, muscles, tendons and blood vessels.
  • Concussion: A concussion is an injury to the brain caused by a blow to the head, or by striking the head on another object. It may result in loss of consciousness or confusion, but the effects usually resolve in a few hours or days.
  • Fractures: When a bone breaks, it is called a fracture. Our Fracture Clinic offers convenient, comprehensive care for pediatric fractures, which includes on-site X-rays and cast placement by specially trained orthopedic technicians.
  • Hip dysplasia: When hip joints don’t develop normally, they don’t work like they should. This condition is known as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). At Phoenix Children’s, we offer surgical and nonsurgical treatments for DDH.
  • Muscular dystrophy: This inherited (genetic) disorder leads to muscle breakdown and weakness.
  • Sarcoma: This type of cancer starts in the bones and connective tissue. Our orthopedics team at Phoenix Children’s partners with other experts to care for children with sarcoma. This care is coordinated through our Sarcoma Clinic.
  • Scoliosis: This condition causes a side-to-side curve of the backbone (spine). Scoliosis can be painful. It can lead to nerve, joint, and organ damage and affects posture and mobility. Our Scoliosis Program gives you access to a highly skilled team of experts across many specialties. Together, we can treat — and in some cases, permanently correct — your child’s scoliosis.
  • Skeletal dysplasia: This term is used to describe a group of disorders that affect bone and cartilage development of a baby in utero (before birth). Our Skeletal Dysplasia and Bone Health Clinic offers you access to the specialists and resources you need to better-understand your child’s condition and care for their changing needs.
  • Spina bifida: Spina bifida — a condition affecting the spine, spinal cord and surrounding nerves — can occur in your child in the earliest weeks of pregnancy, before you even know you are expecting. Spina bifida often causes part of the spinal cord and areas around it to form outside of the body. We offer a multidisciplinary Spina Bifida Clinic to support you and your child in both treatment and long-term care.
  • Sports-related injuries: Some injuries are treated with activity restrictions and pain management, while others require more intense therapy and sometimes surgery. Our Sports Medicine Program serves the health needs of your young athlete. We also partner closely with our Sports Medicine Physical Therapy team to offer state-of-the-art therapies and rehabilitation.
