Pulmonology Fellowship

Sophia Williams, MD MPH
Program Director

Watching family members face difficult illnesses inspired Sophia N. Williams, MD, to become a doctor. She wanted the opportunity to find medical solutions and provide compassionate health care.

As a pediatric pulmonologist, Dr. Williams completed her fellowship at Miller Children’s Hospital in California. She offers children with a full range of respiratory conditions the most advanced approaches to diagnosis and treatment. She specializes in cystic fibrosis, mobile asthma care, pulmonary hypertension, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

“Pulmonary care, to a certain extent, is very mechanical,” says Dr. Williams. “It fosters my joy for problem-solving and exploring new things.”

“I enjoy being on the journey to good health with the child and their family,” she says. “I want them to enjoy life to their fullest potential. In delivering care, I strive to incorporate family values and conduct a very family-centered approach. Plus, children are fun and resilient, so they are a great population to work with.”

Recognized as one of Phoenix Magazine’s TopDocs for the last four years, Dr. Williams is active in local and state professional organizations. She is a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Advisory Board member, a committee member for the Program Evaluation/Pediatric Residency Committee as well as the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Committee here at Phoenix Children’s hospital and she also serves as Pulmonary Rotation and Pulmonary Fellowship Director.

Outside of work, Dr. Williams enjoys cooking with her son, dancing, and traveling.

Andres Herrera-Camino, MD

With expertise in respiratory and critical care medicine, Andres Herrera-Camino, MD, strives to provide high-quality, comprehensive care for patients with complex needs. His clinical and research interests focus on understanding long-term effects that critical illnesses have on the physical, mental, and cognitive domains among ICU survivors. He is particularly interested in characterizing long-term pulmonary sequelae that affect children with severe acute respiratory failure and in implementing programs to mitigate some of these morbidities. The comprehensive and collaborative approach to patient care in the ICU, as well as the in-depth knowledge and understanding of human physiology and my interest in continuity of care and patient outcomes after hospital discharge, drew me to these fields," says Dr. Herrera-Camino, who received his dual training in pediatric critical care and pulmonary medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Herrera-Camino completed his undergraduate training in Lima, Peru, and his pediatric residency at Indiana University/Riley Hospital for Children. Dr. Herrera-Camino is a fellow of The American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of The American Thoracic Society, The Society of Critical Care Medicine and The European Respiratory Society.
