Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R)

Our Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department is dedicated to offering comprehensive, multidisciplinary care that helps children and adolescents achieve their optimal level of independence. Our pediatric physiatrists are skilled in addressing:

  • Physical limitations (range of motion, strength)
  • Developmental assessment
  • General evaluation, surveillance and management
  • Nonsurgical orthopedic surveillance (hips, spine, musculoskeletal complications)
  • Spasticity/tone management
    • Medications
    • Injection therapy for spasticity or dystonia (botulinum toxin and phenol) with use of electrical stimulation/ultrasound guidance (offering both sedated and awake procedures)  
    • Surgical recommendations (intrathecal Baclofen pump, selective dorsal rhizotomy, orthopedic procedures)
  • Therapy prescription, and coordination of those services
  • Bracing and splinting (orthotics) prescriptions
  • Durable medical equipment/functional equipment prescription (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.)
  • Analysis of gait (walking) pattern
  • Some associated medical problems (constipation, drooling, sleep, behavior)
  • Rehabilitation management of swallowing dysfunction
  • Diagnostic assistance/referral recommendations
  • Collaboration with other pediatric specialists (physicians, therapists, psychologist, school staff)
