About Masayo Watanabe, MD

For Masayo Watanabe, MD, family helped inspire his decision to pursue a career in medicine. Over the years, he lost numerous relatives to cancer and witnessed another struggle with a vascular malformation. He decided to specialize in pediatric hematology-oncology -- a field that would allow him to help others facing similar conditions.

Dr. Watanabe feels passionate about providing the best care possible for his young patients. He remembers a sentiment often shared by his grandfather: Children are the future. You never know who will be the one helping you when you are old." This idea inspires the type of care he strives to deliver every day.

My team approach is known for getting things done," says Dr. Watanabe. With its many international connections, his team specializes in the treatment of solid tumors and vascular malformations. It is an honor to be included in the graduations, weddings and birth announcements from all of those who were children when I was privileged to be a part of their care."

Dr. Watanabe is a member of the American Society for Pediatric Hematology Oncology's special interest group in vascular malformations. He also belongs to the American Society of Hematology, the International Society for the Study of Vascular Malformations and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Watanabe joined Phoenix Children's with enthusiasm for the hospital's impact on the community and beyond.

The hospital was growing, with new, bright minds, a motivated nursing staff and wonderfully dedicated administration," he says. I wanted to be a part of that growth."
