Conditions We Treat

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program

The inflammatory bowel disease team at Phoenix Children’s provides expert diagnosis and care for children with all types of IBD.

  • Crohn’s disease—This condition can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, most commonly the end of the small intestine where it joins the beginning of the large intestine (colon). Inflammation may occur through the entire thickness of the bowel wall.
  • Ulcerative colitis—In the GI tract, this disease only affects the large intestine and rectum. Inflammation occurs only in the innermost layer of the intestinal lining.
  • Very-early onset IBD—This term is used to describe IBD that is diagnosed before the age of 6. This type of IBD requires further evaluation. We may collaborate with other specialties including immunology to provide specialized evaluation and treatments for your child.
  • Indeterminate colitis is the term used when a child has IBD, but it’s unclear whether their IBD is Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
