Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology Fellowship Program

Educational Goals

The overall educational mission of the program is to ensure the graduate possesses the knowledge, skills and professional attributes essential to be able to function as a consultant to pediatricians, family practitioners, obstetrics and gynecologists for girls from birth to age 21 as well as older women born with congenital anomalies. Fellows will also learn to work with a team of specialists in the care of girls born with complex anomalies. In addition, fellows will obtain skills that will allow them to function effectively in the arena of basic and clinical research in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Program Description

The fellowship is designed to prepare physicians for a career in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. The goals and objectives are achieved through direct patient care, supervision of residents and medical students, and a comprehensive curriculum that includes conferences, didactic lectures, and journal clubs. This is a two year program.

Program Goals

  • Develop a comprehensive knowledge of pediatric and adolescent gynecology.
  • Acquire expertise in the clinical assessment and management of gynecologic issues of girls and adolescents.
  • Acquire the surgical and procedural skills necessary for the practice of pediatric and adolescent gynecology.
  • Learn fundamental clinical research skills.

Global Objectives

Patient Care

  • Participate in the care of pediatric and adolescent gynecology patients in both the OR and a clinic setting throughout the entire fellowship program.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory operative and procedural skills as documented in a procedural log.
  • Demonstrate skills in clinical diagnosis, patient assessment, and clinical management that are necessary to care for girls and adolescents.
  • Counsel and support girls, adolescents and parents effectively.

Medical Knowledge

  • Attend the majority of the scheduled lectures, Grand Rounds, and journal clubs.
  • Demonstrate a systematic and analytical approach to clinical situations in an office setting as well as the OR.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical considerations that can be encountered in pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Communicate effectively with girls to establish rapport, obtain a reliable history, to motivate adherence to medical recommendations, and to promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Communicate with families to promote adult involvement while still maintaining privacy, confidentiality and respect.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others as a member and a leader of a team.
  • Provide a supportive learning environment for residents and medical students.
  • Anticipate and actively manage work flow for timely completion of patient care.

Professionalism

  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse populations, including developmentally delayed patients.
  • Demonstrate knowledge about medical-legal issues pertinent to pediatric and adolescent gynecology and know state laws and hospital policies.
  • Promptly complete evaluations.
  • Maintain individual procedure and duty log hours.
  • Complete required research and projects.
