Programs & Services

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Leaving your newborn baby in the NICU is not easy. To help you and your family during your baby’s stay at Phoenix Children’s, we offer family-focused support services like:

  • Local lodging. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central and Northern Arizona offers two nearby Ronald McDonald House locations for the families of babies in our NICU. To be eligible to stay, you must live more than 30 miles from Phoenix Children’s. Our social work team can help you with these arrangements.
  • Mental health support. A certified mental health specialist is on hand to support your mental health needs.
  • Nesting rooms. Families preparing to take their baby home after a stay in our NICU have the opportunity to nest with their baby. This allows families to stay overnight with their baby and provides them time to work with our nursing team to understand any special needs their baby may have once they are out of the hospital.
  • Secure Webcam Program. Bedside cameras connected to a secure video feed allow families to “visit” with their baby, even when they are unable to be here in person. Learn more about the Secure Webcam Program.

Other Support Programs

  • Arts-in-medicine. Phoenix Children’s participates in Beads of Courage, a worldwide arts-in-medicine program providing support for children facing serious illness. The program also supports the families and healthcare providers of those children.
  • NICU reunion events. NICU “graduates” and families of babies who have spent time in our NICU at Phoenix Children’s are invited to a NICU reunion event. This event allows families to share their stories and celebrate successes.
  • Quiet time: We observe quiet time in our NICU twice each day. This promotes bonding time for families and helps with health and healing for our fragile patients.
