Neuro-Oncology Program

We’re experienced specialists working together to give the highest level of care for our patients. When a patient is diagnosed with a brain tumor, we present their case to the Phoenix Children’s Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board, a group of physicians from radiation oncology, neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, pathology and neurology. Through a team approach, we use the latest evidence-based treatments, innovative research and psychosocial support to continually try to improve the chances for cure and minimize tumor and treatment related side effects. Together, we decide the best treatment plan for each patient.

Leading-edge research

Brain and spinal cord tumors are the second most common cancers that affect children. As a member of the Children’s Oncology Group — a national research consortium — Phoenix Children’s is one of only two institutions in Arizona that conduct Phase I trials, giving our patients access to the newest, most up-to-date treatments available. In addition to offering access to clinical trials, the Neuro-Oncology Program provides numerous tumor specific treatment options and patient specific treatment, which translates into individualized treatment plans based on the patient’s tumor molecular biology and genomics.

Ongoing care

About 60% of children with brain and spinal cord tumors are cured. We work hard to give them the best chance of beating cancer, but our job doesn’t end there. We also provide aftercare for our patients into early adulthood.
