Psychiatric Services
At Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's Hospital, we strive to provide the best care possible through high-quality, evidence-based care and community collaboration. We currently provide the following services:
Inpatient Services
The Child Psychiatry Inpatient unit is located in the East tower of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This is an 11-bed unit, serving children 12 years and younger. In addition to acute stabilization, we provide a comprehensive evaluation, treatment (including medication management, family work, systems work and group therapy) and we provide recommendations for ongoing treatment after discharge.
We collaborate with parents and outside agencies to recommend the most appropriate care for kids. The unit is transforming care from a medication and behavior-based model to patient and family-centered care. The milieu management philosophy is evolving, using Collaborative Problem Solving techniques and non-coercive interventions. We strive to minimize the use of seclusion and restraints, with an aim of eliminating the use of these interventions.
We are implementing a therapeutic group program aimed at helping kids of all ages and levels of functioning gain improved self-regulation, coping skills and improved interpersonal relationships. Family work is aimed at assisting families’ needs and functioning to address the most urgent issues. We provide services in a trauma-informed way.
Ambulatory Services
We provide services at our Main Campus, East Valley and West Valley locations. The services currently offered include psychopharmacological evaluation and ongoing management, and individual therapy in collaboration with the Division of Psychology.
Consultation-Liaison Service
The Division of Psychiatry provides consultation-liaison service to the other divisions in the Hospital. This service includes a complete psychiatric evaluation and treatment recommendations. Additionally, if indicated, the staff of the service will continue to be involved in the care of the patient while admitted to the Hospital.
