Survivor Programs

At Phoenix Children’s, we believe that completing cancer treatment is a huge milestone, but it's not the final step of care. We start planning for your child's future the moment they're diagnosed. As one of the five busiest children's cancer centers in the country, we've built one of the most comprehensive survivor programs in the Southwest. Your child continues to receive expert care long after their cancer treatment ends.

Once a year, you’ll meet with your child’s care team, which may include:

Mental health professionals
Nurses trained in oncology
Pediatric cardiologists
Pediatric endocrinologists
Pediatric oncologists or oncology nurse practitioners
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialists
Registered dietitians
Social workers

During that visit, we’ll provide health screenings and personalized recommendations based on your child’s treatment history and needs.

We offer care for cancer survivors two years after the end of therapy, through their teens and into adulthood. If you're an adult who had cancer as a child and never got this kind of care, we have services for you, too.

We meet with patients every year until they are 10 years past their therapy and 18 years old, whichever comes later.

Helping Adults Heal

We offer one-time consultations for adults who were treated for pediatric cancers but have never received survivorship care. Our team meets with each patient in a one-on-one setting to provide resources and information, including an individualized long-term follow up care plan to support their continued good health and well-being.

Working together

Our team provides your primary care provider with a comprehensive, detailed, written review of our consultation. You also receive a copy of the consultation with a summary of our recommendations in easy-to-read language.

We're one of the most comprehensive survivor programs in the region, with specialized clinics for bone marrow transplant, brain tumor and heart-related long-term effects that can develop after cancer treatment. That means your child sees specialists who understand the specific risks associated with their treatment, not just general cancer follow-up care.
A plan made just for your child. We follow national guidelines, but your child's care is shaped around their own treatment history, so their plan looks different from anyone else's. At that first visit, they'll get an easy-to-read summary of everything they went through and what to watch for, something families tell us is an invaluable resource for monitoring their child’s recovery over time.
We start planning for the future on day one. Long before your child’s cancer treatment ends, we're thinking about what comes after. That means working to limit long-term side effects from the very beginning, so your child has the best shot at a full, healthy life once treatment is behind them.
Research that leads to real progress. Families who join our long-term follow-up study help build a growing body of knowledge. With more than 1,600 patients so far, our efforts have already led to earlier ways to catch heart and thyroid problems.
Care that doesn't stop when your child grows up. We follow survivors for at least 10 years after treatment, regardless of their age at diagnosis. We also offer one-time visits for adults who didn’t receive this type of care as a child to help them catch up on what they need to know.
