Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship
Fellowship Programs
Our Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship at Phoenix Children’s, affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine, is a one-year ACGME accredited post-graduate training program designed to offer an extensive educational experience in pediatric orthopedic surgery.
Under the supervision and guidance of fellowship trained faculty, you will gain concentrated clinical experience in musculoskeletal disorders involving infants, children and adolescents.
The curriculum is broadly based on five content areas with outlined goals, objectives and learning strategies for each, including spinal deformity, neuromuscular disease, hip and lower extremity disorders, trauma/fracture care and sports medicine.
Throughout the year, you will improve your technical abilities, knowledgebase, leadership/teaching skills, decision making and organizational skills through direct supervised patient care and participation in the conferences, lectures and Journal Club. You will be involved in the education of the orthopedic residents and medical students who rotate on the pediatric service.
The fellowship provides an extensive array of clinical resources. The Center for Pediatric Orthopedics sees over 20,000 patients each year and has continued to grow in both the number and breadth of pediatric orthopedic disorders treated.
As a fellow, you will be expected to complete a scholarly project during the fellowship year, not limited to one project, and it must be high quality and worthy of submitting the manuscript to a leading orthopedic journal. You will work with the research director and research coordinator to identify a project within the first three months, obtain IRB approval and guidance will be given to approach the project in a hypothesis-driven, scientific manner. The research coordinator will also assist in any educational needs such as putting conferences together.
An important part of the fellowship program is the ongoing evaluation to ensure your performance is progressing, according to the six core competencies outlined by the ACGME. These evaluation forms are completed by faculty and other staff on a quarterly basis. You will meet frequently with the program director and other faculty to obtain appropriate feedback throughout the fellowship year.
How to Apply
Fellow applicants must be legal residents of the U.S., having successfully completed an ACGME accredited orthopedic residency. Interested applicants must be admissible to examination by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery or be certified by that board (or equivalent Board).
The fellowship begins August 1 and ends July 31.
