We are here to make sure your baby gets the best possible start to his or her life. Whether it’s working with the Phoenix Children’s Fetal Care Center before your baby is born, or when your newborn arrives in the Phoenix Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), you can count on our expert team to deliver the highest level of care.
The Phoenix Children’s Neonatology Program cares for the sickest newborns – from the smallest preemies to full-term newborns in need of care.
Our experts are specially trained to care for critically ill babies as soon as they arrive in our Level IV Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We care for any condition that affects newborns, no matter how complex. And we have 24/7 access to other nationally-ranked Phoenix Children’s specialists to ensure your baby gets the medical and surgical care they need as soon as they need it.
Planning Your Baby’s Care
If you know your pregnancy is complicated, or you will deliver your baby prematurely, or your baby will have some health challenges after birth, our neonatology team can help ─ even before your baby arrives.
Our neonatologists are part of the Fetal Care Center team who works with your chosen obstetrician (OB), maternal fetal medicine (MFM) provider and other specialists to plan your baby’s care before they are born and prepare for their care in the NICU.
During your pregnancy, you can meet ─ one on one ─ with our neonatologists to discuss your baby’s delivery and plan of care. We will develop a personalized care plan that will ensure both you and your baby’s needs are met. This may include consultation with other Phoenix Children’s nationally-ranked pediatric specialists like our fetal cardiology program or fetal imaging or others.
Phoenix Children’s care and support for your child doesn’t end when your baby leaves our NICU. Through the Newborn Early Screening Team (NEST), we provide support for your child as they grow and develop.
The goal of the NEST Clinic is to help your child meet all of their developmental milestones and give you the tools and support you need to help manage this time in your child's life. This includes continued monitoring and early intervention by a team of developmental experts with advanced education and training in pediatric therapy.
The NEST Clinic therapists evaluate your baby's motor skills and speech development in relation to other children of the same age. Periodic visits with the multidisciplinary team will help to identify any developmental concerns and address them early to prevent challenges in the future.
The multidisciplinary NEST Clinic team includes:
- Occupational therapist
- Physical therapist
- Speech/language pathologist
- Social Services
- Developmental Pediatric Program physician
The results of the evaluation by our NEST team will determine the need for further assessment, additional therapy or a referral to a Phoenix Children’s specialist, including:
You will need a referral from your pediatrician for a NEST Clinic evaluation.
